Regulator Rectifier wiring

#1 PostAuthor: Zedbiker » Sat Nov 19, 2011 3:26 pm

Hi all. I am a newbie here so be gentle with me...
I will introduce myself properly at a later date but at the moment I am hoping for some help.
I have owned my Z1a for a lot of years. It was off the road and stored for approximately 5 or 6 years due to marriage getting in the way. That is all over so I thought I would get the old girl back and running.
A friend of friend (numpty) offered to get it back to its former glory and roadworthy. To cut a long story short he basically did bugger all apart from burn out the regulator rectifier and then did a runner. Luckily I managed to get the bike back.
So I have bought a replacement regulator/ rectifier but it has different wiring to the original Newtronics one previously fitted.
I have the correct 3 phase yellow wires which are obvious, a black (earth) and 1 red wire(live) which is supposed to go to the battery. The newtronics one had 2 live wires. One of which T'd into a white wire coming off the main battery which was fused then disappears behind the starter solenoid and the other was connected into the green connector which I believe is for the ignition switch. So where do I connect the red wire on the new regulator/ rectifier. To the wire from the ignition switch or the mains one which is fused or ignore both and go direct to battery? I do have a photo but haven't worked out how to put it here yet.
I would be so grateful. I am not sure whether the old one burnt out cause it was old (black wire was the one that went) or if it something they did. I am told the bike was running when it started smoking from the Reg/Rect.
I have tried connecting to each of the aforementioned connections but it wouldn't start. Before I start looking elsewhere I wanted to check with the experts that I am doing everything correctly so far.
Looking forward to any help you guys can give.
If it helps it also has a Boyer Bransden ignition system.
Thanks again. Z

the live wire goes into the main red/white power line to/from the battery.

there is normally a double bullet connector near there - plug it into that. The other end of this goes through the loom/fuse to the ignition switch.

the main red/white also goes straight to the + on the battery so if you can't find the double bullet connector you can connect direct to the battery.

Hi, the one you had with 2 lives had to have a trigger live, usually off the brake light live side which is made live when ignition is on,the one you have does not need this, with a fully charged battery the bike should still start and run even with a burnt out unit!!if you have connected it up ok when bike is running you should have 14.6 volts across the battery at about 4k revs..Good luck Paul J

Many thanks guys.
I'm recharging the battery and will connect up as per your advice. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again :D

As per your advice I connected the Reg/ Rect. Knowing that this was correctly connected I persevered with cranking her over and voila she started!!! :D
This is the first time I have heard her running for many years so you can imagine how good it feels. :clap

Next on the list is to go through and replace some bits which were lost or broken or not done during numpty time :no. Next Spring she will be back on he road but all the work will be done by me this time.

Many thanks again. :D

don't forget to put a meter across the battery when its running to ensure its charging ok.

As Paul said - you should see about 14.6v - anything between 14 and 15 is ok. Certainly not more than 15.

Thanks Chrisu

I checked and it was certainly in the 14 - 15 range when at 4000revs.
