Wemoto Brake pistons 0.8mm too short

#1 PostAuthor: nanno » Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:28 am

Alright chaps,

I have bought (ages ago) a set of stainless steel brake pistons for my Z1000J.

Below you will find a table with the specified and the real dimensions and some comments, I am a bit worried that the pistons are too short by 0.8mm and I wonder, whether one can fit them still or if they would interfere with the rubber seal in the caliper.

Dout 42.8 43.0 Outer diameter, is 0.2mm too big, not bad, I can turn that down easily
Hall 36.8 36.0 Height overall, 0.8mmm too short, this is what I am concerned with
H1 28.8 28.0 Deck-heigt, from bottom to dust-seal-groove
Hds 3.0 4.0 Height of the dust-seal-groove - not too worried about this one, but I wonder, whether this will interfere with the seal in the caliper if pushed back home completely!
Tgr 1.0 1.0 Depth of the groove is the same
Dds 41.5 42.0 Diameter of the piston crown, as only rubber has to go over this, this means to me, that it'll be fine and the dust-seal will fit very snuggly

So... to those in the know: will the 0.8mm shorter deck height give serious trouble or not ?

Or does someone have a split caliper handy, where he can meassure with a vernier, at which height the groove sits ?

Cheers,
Greg

P.S.: Sidenote, I was an engineer by trade and I am fully aware that brakes are nothing to be taken lightly, therefore the above is not intended to be replicated by anyone, who isn't fully aware of what he or she is doing.
P.P.S.: I can't take my brake calipers apart, because the Z is still in daily use...

Nanno, in my opinion, these pistons (0.8mm too short) will suffice and will probably be well within the safe limits of the J calliper dimensions.
I have used pistons for a Z1B, from a Lexan car braking system, that were 1.2 mm too short with other dimensions correct. Groove for dust cover was the same. I did watch the wear on pads. Short pistons often droop, if pumped to extremities of the range, these are well out of that category.

That was pretty much, what I thought as well!

Good to know, that I am not the only one doing stuff like that.

Cheers,
Greg
