Thanks to everyone who gave advice ref Smokin. She be back on the road now... The main problem turned out to be ring thickness. My hi compression art pistons have bigger ring grooves than standard so fitting standard 1015 rings is no good. The difference was as much as 0.5 mm though I didn't realise ring thickness was so arbitrary. Even with brand new rings the thickness can vary as much as 0.3mm, I know I measured them.
