The later Mikuni "high-tops" for the Z900-A4, Z1000 A1 & A2 and the Z1R and Mark ii carbs are superior to the Z1 series carbs, albeit, they are also getting expensive. They are definitely easy to tune.
The Z1R 28mm carbs run really well on the Z1 series. I have a friend who changed to 26mm Z900-A4 carbs on a 1050cc Z1 and says it runs like a charm.
