Z1000 spoked wide wheel puzzler

#1 PostAuthor: Holeshot » Thu Aug 25, 2011 3:48 pm

I'm about to attempt to fit a JMC deep brace swing arm to my Z1000A2 and want to use the standard hubs laced with a 17" 5.00 rim & 180 section tyre.
Some questions:

I'll have to address the chain offset and have read in previous posts that a recommended way to this is a 15mm/5/8" offset front sprocket and a wheel built with a corresponding 15mm offset away from the sprocket carrier with spindle/hub spacers re-machined to bring the tyre into a central line. Am I on the right track here?
If so, this means the brake caliper's going to be way inboard which may raise issues with the torque arm. Has anyone ever seen/heard of/made a solution to this?

Also, can the caliper be dropped to run upside down without any problems?

If I'm now running a 17" wheel, will I have to lengthen the shocks to compensate?

Would I need to revise the gearing? Any recommendations?

Feel free to shoot any of the above down as I'm just trying to get my head 'round it at the moment.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

:)

I can help with some of the answers.

5/8 offset is the way forward for the front sprocket.

Longer shocks will help restore some of the lost ride height

Gearing will benefit from being altered. If you're gonna run a 530 chain, then I'd recommend a 19t front sprocket, which is a special order from Talon, but if you're quick I think Brian 450 & Pigford maybe about to order some from Talon & the more you order, the cheaper they get. :sou

I think Steve Debben has got wide spoked wheels in his Z,maybe worth a word with him.
A 5.5" rim would be better for a 180 tyre.
