Z1b Candy Super Blue paint to spray and/or sample to match?

#1 PostAuthor: pertonpc » Thu Mar 04, 2010 7:32 pm

Hi Fellas,
I am getting a Z1b which has no original paint left on the panels. Would like to get it sprayed back to the original blue colour or very close.
Questions:
1. Anyone got a sample of the original colour which I could borrow or locate/ download to get matched?
2. Anyone know who supplies that colour or a similar one for respray purposes? (and what they call it?)
I have a good local sprayer and can get a decal set nearby.
I appreciate the original colour was a candy 3 part colour but could probably live with a modern metallic if the match was close.
Thanks a lot from Mark

PertonPC, you have set yourself a real task, in establishing the correct original Candy colour for the blue Z1B. They varied from a pasty blue, a greeny blue, a dull blue to a royal blue! As you mention, that you would go with a modern metalic blue, you may find you may have to go that way.

I have seen many originals and have seen the latest blue PMC aftermarket painted tank sets as well as the Doremi blue tank set. Both are good. PMC is closer to original and the Doremi is a more beautiful blue, tending towards Royal blue.

My advice is, find a painter that can do the candy paint process and get him to produce a blue colour that suits you. Pay particular attention to where the tank stipes go, relative to the tank badge and where they terminate at the seat and the tank front flange edge..... Good luck.

As a footnote, I have a Z-nut mate that purchased a few well preserved original blue tanks and side covers to establish the original colour, his opinion after spending $x,000, was they varied .

Same applies to Super Candy Red, loads of variations from a murky brown to more ruby red. Check out Rick Bretts website and the section on tank colours, he has original tanks for H series bikes that vary enormously so who's to say what is correct? Go with what you are happy with and argue with the rivet counters that there's no such thing as the definitive colour. Paul Scanlon put an article in club mag last year on the painting process, done by Hutchy I think, so maybe get Hutchy to do your Blue paint if original process is important to you.

My understanding is that these came from the same supplier. I haven't seen any differences. Garn, could it be that you were shown items that weren't from both PMC and Doremi?
At any rate, it may be worth asking your a local dealer if they have a sidecover which could be ordered to help a painter match colour.
Until a couple of years ago one sidecover (can't remember which side) was still available in Z1B blue as was ducktail...maybe the best way to go for matching purposes?

GBH, perhaps it is so, that PMC & Doremi have the same supplier (Painter). Perhaps, they fell into the same inconsistent colour match as Kawasaki. ..... Pasty blue.... Greeny Blue... Royal Blue. I have seen them all!

There was a good story [approx 4 years ago on this site- Lacquer Fumes would remember] about a guy that worked in a Kawasaki motorcycle outlet, where a customer wanted a side-cover replacement. The customer was shown a selection of about six new Z1B blue side-covers, to try and find a match... They were all different!

I have a fair idea what the correct colour is, in my head, as do a lot of us. It's a pity we all don't have the same image, because the contract Kawasaki painters for the blue Z1b, definitely had it all screwed up.
