Not a Z

#1 PostAuthor: mikey » Sun Dec 06, 2009 8:07 am

Not a z i know but anyone on here had any experience repairing
Triumph speed triple starter motor sprag clutches.
From what i have learnt this is a common problem, and if you havent got the top crankcase inspection panel (mine don't  ) its engine out job and bottom crankcase off.

Everyone i spoke to including my local Triumph main dealer (Fowlers) are a bit vague
about what bits i have to buy as there is an updated and improved repair kit.

Its a 1995 carb model thought id add that as any time i buy bits for it they ask is it carb or injection.

mate off mine has done the mod a few times, but only by taking the top panel off, he did it on the tiger i bought off him and also on another mates tiger. as you dont have the panel then its an engine strip. He borrowed the tool to do the job, I think he's on holiday at moment but when he gets back i can get him to tell me exactly whats involved and let you know.

Another mate of a mate had his go on his speed triple. Think he took it to a dealer and it cost about £300. I think all the injected models were sorted and it was only the carb ones that had the problem.
Me mate knows more about triumphs than some dealers, he has a few of the hinckley ones,
first 595, legend, first inj tiger, 1050 tiger, rocket 111, bonnie, thruxton, all modded slightly, in fact he's a bit anal when it comes to triumphs, strange thing is though he used to be a member of the z1 club a few years ago.had a really really nice blue Z1B and a 73 uk Z1 that i bought off him.

ill let you know asap whats involved.

Hi Mikey,
Right here goes,
HOW TO CHANGE THE
SPRAG CLUTCH ACORDING TO ME MATE.

engine out

turn upside down(the engine not yourself) and remove sump

carefully undooooooo the oil banjo's on the oil pipes, (THESE ARE SMALL AND CAN BREAK IF YOU ARE NOT GENTLE WITH EM,)

remove bottom crankcase.(you will have to remove the side covers first, eg clutch cover etc).

remove gears (main shaft and lay shaft)

take sprag clutch off. NOW YOU HAVE TO COUNT THE NUMBER OFF TEETH ON IT, SOME HAVE 14 SOME HAVE 16, NOW YOU CAN ORDER THE CORRECT PART FROM TRIUMPH,(you need the same amount off teeth)

triumph say you also need to replace the idler gear but its about £80 so if its not marked and looks ok you can re-use it.

once you have replaced the sprag clutch then you can put everything back into the top crankcase. (make sure the selector forks go back in the same position as when they came out )

when you put the bottom crankcase on make sure the 2 dowel pegs are lined up. you will crack the cases if they are not lined up when you tighten the bolts.

now for the careful bit, when you put the oil pipes back make sure the small oil banjo type bolts are torqued up. DONT OVER TIGHTEN THEM OR YOU WILL SNAP THEM.

Apart from a couple of new gaskets that is all there is to it. My mate has done 4 of these and he recons about 4 hrs to do it for the first time, He can do it in about 2 and a half hrs now.

you dont need any special tools. As yours is the one without the inspection cover (cosworth crankcase's) the only way is to remove the engine as above.

you cant order the new sprag clutch until you know how many teeth you need.
My mate says the bill for bits, if you do what triumph recomend is about £300 then loads more for labour.
If you get stuck you can ring me or maybe better still i'll have a word with me mate again and find when its best for you to ring him and he will talk you through it.

good luck,
peter.
