Engine No

Hi can any body shed any light on this engine no Z1E963231. Recently had a few comments on it as it may be wrong any information would be helpfull.

Think it is a Z900 engine which started at Z1E-086001 but don`t know what number they finished at before Z1000s.

Mark. I had a Z900-A4 with a frame number Z1F-095516, manf 10/75, with an engine number Z1E-099938, Your number engine ZIF-963231 with this number of digits, sounds like it came out of the Nabraska...
There was a Z900 frame manufacture in Nabraska about 11/75 with a frame number starting at about Z1F- 970000. This could be a matching engine for this series...

Z1 engine and frame numbers

All Z1 & KZ900 frame numbers are stamped on the steering head. Additionally, in the USA & Canadian market, there is a white sticker on the steering head showing the frame number and the date of manufacture. The frame numbers will be in the following ranges

1973 Z1

Z1F-00001 through Z1F-19999
1974 Z1-A Z1F-20000 through Z1F-47499
1975 Z1-B Z1F-47500 through Z1F-85700
1976 KZ900-A4 Z1F-85701 through Z1F-13xxxx for bikes manufactured in Japan
1976 KZ900-A4 & 1977 KZ900-A5 Z1F-500001 through Z1F-51xxxx for bikes assembled in Lincoln Nebraska
Z1 & KZ900 engines have engine numbers stamped on the top right side crankcases on a raised area over the clutch. The engine numbers follow the same general range as the frame numbers. Frame and engine numbers were not matched at the factory, although most frame / engine number combinations are within 200 numbers. Most bikes have the engine number higher than the frame number, but this is not always true. We have records showing new bikes sold where the engine number is less than the frame number - although this is fairly rare.

While the frame and engine numbers are the best indication of the model and whether the engine has been replaced, these are not the only numbers to help validate an 'authentic' Z1.

1974 Z1-A
FRAME NUMBER: Z1F-020001 >
ENGINE NUMBER: Z1E-020001 >
COLOUR: CANDYTONE BROWN/ORANGE OR CANDYTONE GREEN/YELLOW
Major changes for this model were the silver engine finish, redesigned tank and tailpiece markings and a stop lamp failure light in the tachometer. The idiot light cover was also changed, the warning lights were now placed in a different order. The best gets better.


1975 Z1-B
FRAME NUMBER: Z1F-047500 >
ENGINE NUMBER: Z1E- 047500 >
COLOUR: CANDY SUPER BLUE OR CANDY SUPER RED
Major changes for this model were paintwork and markings, larger side panel badges and the adoption of an 'O' ring chain instead of the previous built in chain oiler. The switchgear was slightly cosmetically changed and the Speedo was now in 10-mph increments. The fuel tap was changed from black to silver and the carbs were modified to improve performance.



1976 Z900-A4
FRAME NUMBER: Z1F-085701 >
ENGINE NUMBER: Z1E-086001 >
COLOUR: DIAMOND DARK GREEN OR DIAMOND BROWN
Major changes for this model included colour and marking, different side panels and badges, airbox, twin front brakes, locking fuel cap, three way fuse system, hazard warning lights, audible flasher indicator, square tail light, improved instrument cluster and a change to smaller 26 mm carbs. Power was down to 81 bhp but the Z900 was a much better bike to ride. A few extra models
rolled off the American production line in Lincoln in 1977 known as the KZ900-A5.

Hi thanks for all the help.but at the moment still non the wiser this is the chassis no Z1F48472 / Engine no Z1E963231 / Reg AVS 274N I don't think they match up as far as I know the engine was changed over just befor I got it. Any information or history of the bike would be helpfull.

Is the bike an Import ? I'd suspect it is from the Reg number, and I also suspect that the engine is also of U.S. Origin - The correct engine would have been within a couple of hundred number of the frame ?

Hi you were right it is an import came to the UK 27/3/1990 also according to the log book it was first manufactured 1975.

Mark are you sure the first number on your engine is a nine? could it be a zero? and although It's not relevant to you but I think the two hundred-ish difference between engine and frame numbers isn't the case on the Z900A4's other than the real early ones, possibly due to the engines taken for the Ltd models but I stand to be corrected.

Sorry Mark, i can't find his number.
You are right, his surname is Beale, he did have his own plumbing/heating business, based in Lichfield. Oddly enough, i hadn't seen him for ages, yet saw him twice this year, at different events.
It's worth asking Jerry if he has any contact details for him.

Hi Phil I rely don't want to get in touch with rob if I can help it.When he delivered the the bike to my house there was a few parts that had been changed over from when I seen it the first time gave me a load of bullshit as to why had changed the parts over. changed the exhaust and took an oil cooler off so you can see why I don't want to get in touch.
