Yeah, Al, let Andy give it a blast  If there's a "weak bit" he'll overload it & make it fail - problem found :!:

In the past several non-engine related noises have disguised themselves as engine noises;-

On the Harris (Z1100R1)
Loose bolt inside the tank - sounded like top end thrash.
Worn clutch push rod - chatter at various revs.
Failed clutch push rod bearing (tapered behind clutch casing) dodgy noise.
Knackered rearset gear lever mechanism output shaft bracket - gear lever vibrated at certain revs and sounded horrible, like a drill.

On the Drifter VN1500
Headlight rim vibrates against the shell (factory fault) sounds just like noisy valve gear. People have even stripped down the top end only to find out afterwards that a strip of tape around the rim stops the noise!

I reckon if the noise has been there for 3 years and it was the motor, something would have failed by now.

Good luck,
Rod.

I too have had the headlight noise.

Particularly bad from 3 - 4.5k revs.

Thanks Andy; racing false teeth fitted two years ago but it was a helpful suggestion as ever.

Thanks for the idea. Recently had a bit of metal tube fall out of the baffle plate into the 4;1 collector. Made a similar noise, so i went round and over-tightened everything.

I will have a look at the headlight too because its all got to come apart.

When i bought the bike from a mate three + years ago he said; "fatter hairy'er, ugly'er smellier people than you have tried to break these and you wont succeed where they have failed"

Guess what; he was right.
