what is this cap for? :?: and if I should ever remove it, what can I expect to find inside - a spring pinging out?

Its the "blank plug" for the oil gallery - if you take it off, all you'll get is a facefull of 10/40w

Always fit a pressure gauge on the end
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Pigford, you could be slightly mis-informing our friend, by ... "Always fit a pressure gauge on the end". It should be explained that, you don't have to fit a gauge on the end! However, if you want to to test the oil pressure you may use this point to connect. Also, some guys use this point as one of the points to connect to an oil-cooler. Agree that you could get a face full of oil!
