Wheels....

#1 PostAuthor: Coose » Fri Oct 14, 2016 3:33 pm

Afternoon all,

I think my J needs some wider rims, though with a 2.15" front from a Z1300 and a 2.5" rear from a GPz1100 I don't think I'll find anything that's 7-spoke and wider. So, other than splashing out £2k for a set of magnesium Morriseses I'll have to look at other options. Astralites would be nice (though I doubt that Al will sell me his), and I have a fear of old magnesium rear Dymags cracking, though I would certainly consider a set if they were in good condition. Or, a set of 5-spoke CMAs maybe.

Does anyone have anything of interest?

Cheers,
Coose :)

Ey up Charlie. I'm using stock forks and a Davida swinging arm.

OK mate, it does limit what you can get in there then.

I am changing forks and swingarm to get wider wheels into mine, even with a Metmachex already installed at the back.
It truly became a nightmare to try and find anything of substance that would go in the stock front end in particular and the rear to a slightly lesser extent. Wheel spindle thickness, disc spacing, caliper heights all have to be considered - it's a real hassle. Its far easier to change the lot for matched sets. I can message you where I am at with mine if it helps.

These are some wheel bearing/spindle sizes I put together to try and see what can be done. It may help you. I am pretty sure it is all accurate, but confirm please before spending money based on this sheet :)

Cheers Charlie, though I'm not too worried. Once I move the torque arm (to accommodate an underslung caliper) there's plenty of room in the swinger, and I had to do a bit of bearing and spacer juggling to get the Z1300 front wheel in there in the first place but it wasn't impossible. I'm only looking at going to maybe a 2.5" front and a 3.5" rear, and I want to keep the stock forks. If it comes to it I can use the Police yokes which are a bit wider, but I doubt it'll come to that.

The front calipers aren't an issue - they're Grimecas on aluminium brackets so I'm expecting to have to make new plates.
