It's a balance Paul. Conventional wisdom is that it is better value to buy one already in good condition. I'd consider anything within reason. It's the old money/time equation I guess. Do you have something in mind?
cheers Jonathan

price

#5 PostAuthor: jonathan » Fri Dec 13, 2013 10:25 am

Ah Paul, the piece of string question.....
I can see the high prices on ebay but I also hear the stories of people waiting and getting a 'snip' with patience. I really don't want to be one of those responsible for pushing prices up; I think these should be used not stored because of their value.
If a valueless mark II came up at £1500 because there was some major flaw(non-originality/crashed previously/import from Nigeria/I don't know??)I would be quite happy with that provided it looked right. It is the bike that I want not it's value. I would be quite happy to pass on the £1500 bike for £1500 if that is what it was worth. Does that make sense?
Nitty-gritty: Right now I have £3k cash. If the right bike came along I could find more. How much do I need? 6k?8k?

£3k should get you quite a lot of Mkll, you just need to be patient, which is easily said I know.

Is it the style of bike that interests you?
In other words do you prefer the mk2 shape to the z1/z900 shape?

If so you could think about this.
Get a 1000ST and convert it to chain drive.
works out a lot cheaper than a mk2 would.

Good idea

#14 PostAuthor: jonathan » Sun Dec 15, 2013 6:53 am

Hi Oldzed
It is absolutely the style that matters most. That's a good suggestion. In fact it's not even the drive that's the issue. Is it only the tank that's different bodyworkwise? Maybe a mkII tank on an ST would work? Anyone else done that?
I guess we've both been to Nigeria Jimmock!

No they are different but anything can be made to fit (may look a bit of a dogs breakfast  )

There are threads on here with the st chain conversion.

I think you will be looking at north of £4k now for what you want unless you stumble across something.

Why not get a 1000j put your mark on it and enjoy!?
