Hi Guys, I'm looking to convert my Z1000 ST engine to chain drive and as far as I know need the folling parts to do it, Output shafts or both gear clusters from Z900 Z1000 kickstart models, Gear selector drum and gear lever rod, Inner sprocket cover, outer sprocket cover with clutch worm drive. If any of you kind gentlemen have any of these parts and would like to sell them to me please get in touch, thanks $tevie.

Stevie,I'm pretty sure that if you take the shaft drive stuff of the engine it's just a normal Z1000 MK2 set up :??
You shouldn't need a different gearbox or anything.
If what I was told was correct the ST is the MK.2 motor with the bevel gear added.

Ah OK. I do remember doing the same to a GT750 years ago and Don't remember having to do a great deal to convert it to chain. Certainly not gear selector drum anyway. What I'll do is wait for more info on here before I go any further, The less I have to buy and change the better, thanks man, $

Once you've got the shaft shite off the motor, you'll be able to see what you're dealing with.
Speak to Dave Marsden at Z-POWER for the kosher S.P.

you need the output shaft from any Z1-MKII engine, also gear selector drum and gear lever rod. inner sprocket curved cover from late MKII/LTD engine or J GPZ. Z1-early MKII does not fit without oil leckage.
at least if you want to use the better ST clutch you need the 8mm clutch push rod from GPZ ( Z1-MKII is 7mm) plus 8mm oil ring in inner sprocket cover .

Update: Just bought a NOS inner sprocket cover, so will not need that part.

Im interested to see how you go with this project,it sounds cool. Can I ask,why are you changing from shaft to chain??? I had an ST a while back, and the idea of never having to adjust a chain was right up my street. :D
One of my friends has 1 or 2 (not sure)GT750 engines he was going to convert to chain drive for a chopper project, which I can understand the need for a chain. Please tell me?? Ive seen a few shafties with modern wheels fitted,so It must'nt be that reason? I need to know!!?

Hi, sorry I must have written it wrong. I own a KZ1000A1 without an engine and I've just acquired an ST1000 engine, not the whole bike. So I'm looking at changing just the engine from shaft to chain. If my memory serves me right changing a GT750 to chain is a pretty easy task, I done one years ago without any difficulty, and I'm no great mechanic. The reason I changed it was My Z750 chop blew up and I bought the GT engine, so I had a whole engine to take parts from. I think I used the bottom casing from the Z along with several internals obviously.

I Have all that stuff from a KZ1000 A3 you will have to buy the gear box as a whole as I won't split it. Let me know if you are interested and I will sort out some photos and prices.

Dixie.
I bought all the stuff to do this as well.
I decided it was worth doing for 2 reasons.

1 The ST has a massive swingarm pivot point so pretty much anything can be put in swingarm wise

2 The standard ST running gear weighs an absolute ton in comparison to even slightly more modern stuff.

And if you need any more reasons

The ST is the poor relation in the Zed line up so Its cheaper than selling it and getting a chain drive bike.
I can do it so i just want to

I like your outlook on the reasons for the chain drive conversion. :D
A friend of mine built a gt750 framed bike and used a hayabusa swingarm, that he had to add spacers too at the swingarm pivot! You could go for a 240 tyre in the back of your frame!
Do you want to buy a 240 tyre??? Ive a few.
