Thanks for that Steve!
I have a full unitrack cluster which is going into early cases.
The splined portion of the unitrack input shaft is too long where the clutch goes so just need the 'J' etc shaft to substitute.
The uni's 1st gear has 16t as opposed to the z9's 14.
If the 'J' shaft has 16t then i only need the shaft and not the matching 1st output cog.
As mentioned i have a complete 1100 unitrack to split and allsorts of 900/1000 stuff to trade.

Phil i have a J3 /1000R short input shaft pictured above with a 14 tooth first gear and a Uni long main shaft with a 14 tooth first also pictured below.
Where does this leave you and which combination will you need?
I have the co-responding output shaft gear to go with the 14 tooth input shaft first if needed.

Ok! That threw a spanner in the works and had me running back to the workshop to double check the tooth count.
My uni box is an 83 A1, the first of this model and the first gear is 16t.
I only have a clymer manual for the later z/gpz1100 and it doesn't state the amount of teeth on any of the gears but i would guess they wouldn't go back down to 14 for later versions ?
I think the z1100 shaft had this long input shaft also with a semi slipper type clutch.
Maybe your long output is from one of those ?
A closer inspection has revealed that all the uni's gears will swap straight on to a Z9/1000 input shaft .
If this is the same for the matching 1st on the output then i will have the set-up i need but with a lower 1st gear and a larger gap to second.
Don't know how this will translate on the road though ?
Is the uni the only box with 16t on the input.
If so the only alternative to what i can put together now is a complete 'J' box or have a go at shortening and threading the uni's shaft .

The top (short shaft) is from a J3 / 1000R and the lower in the picture is from a UNI. Neither sets of case had been apart before me.
I also have an 1100R full gear cluster from unbroken cases and it has 14 teeth also.
Needless to say its a UNI engine too.
The kawasaki manual for the J 1,2,3, K1, M1, 1100 B1, K2, 1100B2, M2, 1000 R1 and R2 all say 14/37 for first gear.
The kawasaki manual for the UNI A1 says 14/37 for A2 says 14/37 and for the 1100R1 it says 14/37.

So! What have i got then ?
This motor had no signs of being apart except for the cam cover.
Looks like a night of sleuthing for me.
Do you have the ratio figures for the uni's other 4 gears so i can compare .

A1 / A2 / A3 / 1100R From the Kawasaki supplement manual
37/14 2.642
33/18 1.833
27/19 1.421
27/23 1.173
26/25 1.040
The only difference is third gear on the J B and K M 1000r and that is
30/21 1.428
Interestingly the Base manual for the j etc shows an exploded view of the cluster with the input shaft first gear missing. Dont know the reason for this!!!

Thanks.
I will count all my gearbox teeth tommorow to see if the others are different too.
If they turn out to be the same ratio's i'll be able to use the 14t input if the 1st output cog will swap too.
