Photo's of original Z1B bodywork

#1 PostAuthor: ROZZER » Sun Oct 09, 2011 6:14 pm

Gonna get a spare tank/panels painted up for my Z1B (already decided to use KAS racepaint based on the oustanding repair they did on my tailpiece), has anyone got some close up photo's of original bodywork (not PMC/Doremi/whoever paintjobs) showing how the stripes should look (I know there were slight differences from factory).
Need close ups of the tank back end where the white/black stripes meet and front edge showing how the stripes stop short of the front edge, shot looking down on tank would help as would side shots + tail unit.
I really want to get this right first time, an expensive job for it not to look right so any assistance would be much appreciated, gonna get it done in super candy blue, again difficult to get right as again there were some differences from the factory, I've seen some great paint jobs in the blue but the colour has sometimes looked wrong, too blue IMO.

Please send photo's to my email address, hope to drop off bodywork and photo's with KAS at Stafford show

Cheers in advance

My Z1b is all original paint John, and you would be surprised how the tank is finished at the front end

Candy super blue is laid on a Mauve basecoat, it then has a Candy Blue clearcoat, the mauve is often missed out, this is why some look too blue.

The black stripe, does not go all the way to the front, it ends short in a straight line, leaving a blue area, and you can feel the white stripes by touch, I think they must be tape stripes? all of which is clear coated.

(not PMC/Doremi/whoever paint jobs)

Be interested in your thoughts here, as I've been half toying with that idea for a Z1-A

Kas race paints

#7 PostAuthor: Bob Todd » Mon Oct 10, 2011 3:55 pm

I used these last year for one of my restorations, the paint job was good, but no better than any other well known painters, there was a lot of grit left in the tank from media blasting ( I was told the tank would be dipped in stripper to remove the old paint but this was not so) and quite a lot of orange peel could be seen in the finish, I have used PMC/Doremi paint sets and they are very good, Bob.

Kev,
Yeah mate I knew about the stripes finishing off at front of bike- plenty of photos in Hesse/Marsden books, what is less clear is how the white stripes finish at the back end, some pics show the white stripe above the gold meeting the lower white stripe that borders the black strip, others show a gap between so I'm not sure what is correct. My gut says its a gap there but........... :?? Will check out your pics when you post em mate - thanks

Bob, KAS they have impressed me with the repair they did for me and Paul is an honest guy, I'm sure that he would have put your concerns right if he had been told, I had a minor issue with my repair 18 months after he did it, he took it back and sorted with no charge for job or postage, as he says you live or die on a reputation. One things for sure if mine ain't right he will be informed and not paid until it is.

Z903 - Nowt wrong with PMC sets, Doremi not as good IMO however they both use pattern tanks on which there have been some issues with the shape of the tank arond the fuel tap area - something to check before buying mate. I managed to get a good original tank and new PMC side panels and tail (excellent quality and better than original really) otherwise I may have been tempted by PMC but for the price, which these days is well over a thousand quid!!!!!
