two of my shims are down to size 200 which I believe is the "end of the line" for future adjustment. Also the head has some major fin damage. So I just wondered if anybody has a Z1000 A1 or A2 cylinder head for sale.

You could safely get a "whisker" taken off the valve stem

"The Devil you know" and all that, another head could be just as bad/worse :??

Fins can be welded up or built up again :P

ZGAZ,
I have a head, came from a Z1000ST, complete with valves, shims & cams. I will be looking for £150 delivered by UPS. If you're interested I will check the sizes of the shims already fitted, should give you some idea of the life left in it.
Cheers GB

Thanks for your offers/advice. I think I will follow Pigford's suggestion & take the vavles out to check whether they can be skimmed. In the Clymer manual it says that the valve stub end can be skimmed up to 4.2mm, so hopefully I can get this done. I'll post the results! Cheers

ZGAZ, Grinding down the valves is possible, I have done it myself, but 4.2mm seems a lot, are you sure it's not 0.42mm :?

Hi GB I think what the Clymer manual is saying is that top part of the valve stem (from the collet groove to the top) must not be ground below 4.2mm. I have just taken out the first valve & that part of the valve stem measures approx 5mm. Therefore in theory I suppose I could have up to 0.8mm ground off that one. As you say taking say 0.4mm or even a bit less sounds about right. Cheers Gaz

Don't know if you're aware ZGAZ, but I believe the club operate a shim exchange service.

The installed valve height should be within the range of 37.17 - 38.06mm if It's more than that up to a maximum of 38.37mm you can take up to a maximum of 0.3mm from the stem, there should be a minimum of 4.2mm left above the groove. The next move after that would be oversize valves.
The installed valve height should be measured from the top of stem to the cylinder head surface without the spring seat being in place.
