Help wanted with Z1000LTD 1981
Hi guys need some advise got none runner tries to run but spits back through carbs feels like its to far advanced and tries to lock up like a car does when its to far advanced its pickup ign so is none adjustable but there is some free movement when you turn the larger nut on the adv/ret mech. with the plugs out there is about half an inch forward and back free movement in the crank before the pistons move could this be the crank pins lose ? or a broken crank? i am going to remove the stator casing and try and turn the nut on that end of the crank whilst holding the nut on the ign. side any ideas guys also contemplating elongating the pickup back plate mtg. screw holes to get some retardation to the ign as i feel it will start once retarded a little i am not clued up with these engines at all so any HELP would be appreciated, anyone got an engine for sale?
with the plugs out there is about half an inch forward and back free movement in the crank before the pistons move

Wind the pistons down an inch or 2, put a cable tie down the plug hole, so the ends sticking out, then try turning it. When the pistons are halfway down the bore, the cable ties should move as soon as you turn the crank

And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!
no mate i tried it with them on the down stroke feels like a car wheel if you slacken all the bolts off the wheel moves slightly but not the hub if you know what i mean is it a common problem could do with someone who knows about these engines having a look at it story was that the bike had had a drop on the right side years ago and had not been run since guy i got it off said he had replaced the pickups as they were damaged and there was no spark the adv/ret mech. is bent and cracked at the back but fits ok and will work i have a fresh one coming its just the forward and back free movement that has me worried

Its not the have a go thats the problem its the remembering where the bits go when its been apart for a few weeks 55 now and memory is not what it used to be 20 odd years ago i would have done it myself but as you get older the cant be bothered attitued sets in and i have two cars and another bike and they all need some attention but the Z is taking up most of my spare time at the mo and to be honest not having touched one of these before i would sooner let someone who knows the problems with them take a look inside (as you do) so it will be try a confirm my suspicions this weekend and pull the motor out if i am right i have a fair bit of cash stood in it now so its do i or do i lose the lot and the rest of it is quite good tank needs paint done the fork seals frame had cracked where the side stand is which was an easy repair (i have a mig) all new brakes tyres and the exhaust system (original) is very good as is the rest of the chrome clocks are damaged but got a set from the states along with some carbs it would be a shame to break it up as at the end of the day its only about how much money you can throw at it and it probably stands me at more than its worth now.
So i guess its an all or nothing senario

Z1000 update
Hi guys ok did some more investigating tonight and found that the small dowel pin in the right side of the crank has been bodged with a bad fitting screw so i made one and that has cured the problem with the adv/ret mech. all marks lign up where they should, but its still no go so i thought the only thing left is the cam timing and found out that its 180 degrees out on both cams the book says that the small notches on the right side end of the cams should point away from each other with T on the mark firing 1/4 well these point towards each other inlet points forward exhaust back inlet should be pointing towards the carbs and exhaust pointing towards the front pipes someone has been a messin. was thinking of removing the two bolts in the sprocket and turning the cam 180 and bolting the sproket back on and then doing the same with the other cam watching the valves of course is it possible to do it this way ?
