4.5 - 5.00 X 17`` Rear wheel to fit Z1R?

#1 PostAuthor: AndyZ1R » Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:33 pm

Hello all,

I would like to try and find a 17'' rear wheel that maybe someone has already used on a Zed so knows it would fit. It would need to have a max 160/170 rear tyre on it and be 4.5 - 5.00'' wide, as that matches what i currently have, except mine is a 4.5 x 18'' Astralite. I`d like a 17'' to get better tyre options, or any ideas what may suit?
I know i will have to faff around with spacers, but if someone has already done it or has one for sale it will give me a head start.

Many thanks in advance,

Andy

Think you might have to go for an early zx6 or fzr6 wheel etc as these take either a 150 or 160 tyre . Most people use a zxr750 or zx9r wheel for an easier life as the original 'Z's 630 pitch sprocket bolts straight on to their carrier so no special sprocket needed if keeping 630, but these are a 5.5 or 6'' rim (170 /180 tyre) so you would need a wider swinger and most newer 600+ bikes are out coz most now run 180/190 rears.

ZXR 400 wheels are 4.5 inch 150/160 you can get em for as little as £20 on the bay, think they are the same sprocket pattern as zx9 etc too, or talon do all width sprockets for most carriers :D
If its not broken, fix it till it is

Suzuki GSXR 750/1100 K models have a 4.5" x 17" rear wheel.

Rim width is relatively easy to source, but check the hub width as well. Suzuki SV650, 600 Bandit etc usually have 4.5 rims and narrower hubs than Kawas. For spindle sizes / ease of fitment size the bearings as some run relatively small spindles.

That would be too big for mine Hillbilly, but would be great on a Zed, how much was it? ZXR 400 wheels all seem to be around £50 for just a bare wheel.

Just be aware that Kawasaki rear wheels seem to be a lot wider across the hub than Suzuki wheels for the same rim width, or certainly the 4.5 ones which will take a 160 are, maybe as much as 50mm, which can cause problems getting them into any given swinging arm.

I have a 4.5 Suzuki wheel which I wanted to replace with a Kawasaki one (as I'm a purist) and I got a lovely green ZXR one - it's a shitload fatter - still haven't worked out how to deal with it as I like the swinging arm. Check all your widths....

Just noticed that Rich already mentioned this the wise old owl :geek

Good points Spiny and Rich, i`ve just bought a Bandit 600 wheel complete less tyre on Ebay for £25, at least with Suzuki hubs being narrower it should be just a case of spacers hopefully, i`ll see how it lines up once i get it.
I do have a Metmachex arm and the current Astralite uses spacers already, so width wise there shouldn`t be any problems. Thanks again to all who replied.

Could the swing arm from the bike that the replacement wheel came from not be used? As in, if you sourced a wheel from a ZX, could the ZX swing arm not be modified and used?

Yeah it could but then you're into changing the swing arm as well as the wheel and that can open another whole can of worms - some of the zx arms are a shitload wider across the pivot point too, it all depends where you're prepared to stop. Usually a good start point is with a swingarm that'll fit the frame and a wheel that''ll fit that. I'm generalizing here because to be honest it's not an avenue I've researched because I've seen zeds with ZXR swingarms that needed serious frame surgery to get them in so that put me off. ZRX arms are fairly close off and will take a big wheel but Andy just asked about the wheel.
