Went to set up a Z1R-TC

Went over to help a friend out today, setting up his Z1R-TC "Molly" that hadn't been run for 30 years!

As he wants to ride it regularly, I advised him to fit the Mikuni HSR42 carb and Dyna 2000 ignition system, along with an adjustable pressure switch in the plenum to automatically retard the ignition under boost.
I set the timing, set the retard boost switch to 5 psi and set the carb up.
After a bit of spinning the motor over (which has been rebuilt) it fired up no problem.
The Rajay turbo was overhauled by my mate Dave Dunlop (the Rajay turbo god!) and it sounds real sweet.
The fuel height will need setting (hence the small bit of fuel overflowed on the floor) and the oil pressure switch was duff (I'm sending him one over FOC).

It's nice to see a TC in it's original condition, something which my friend intends on how to keep it, not restored!

Whilst I was there, he showed me a few more of his collection....

Harris F1 with 998cc genuine XR69 GS engine (sub 1000cc works engines only had 4 plug head)
Image

A beautiful UK spec RC30 (lower fairings away being painted)

And his pride and joy, a Kawa Z1000R1, modified to his own personal taste and exquisitely done too
I did have to "rib him" over the pink HT leads though, but I thinks that must be his feminine side coming out !

put a small pump and regulator on the z1r and set the pressure between 2 -3 psi and it should start on about half a crank :wink:id get the fuel mixture checked on a dyno

Neil - Tried that but the HSR carbs will only cope with about 1 psi before it leaks past the fuel valve so no good!

I wasn't aware that there is such a thing as a 'turbo spec' HSR ?
The carb on both my Silver Saxon and my mates TC are HSR42 from Allens Performance. Nothing was said about a specific turbo spec carb when ordering....
I bought a 1-2 psi pump and fuel pissed past the valve at it's lowest setting. I even bought a replacement fuel shut-off valve assembly (nitrile tipped) but it made no difference.
Instead I now run a huge fuel tap with 8mm ID outlet and 8mm ID bore hose to the carb. I feel that should be plenty for 'progressive' use
My mates TC runs a Pingel tap.

Marlin - Yeah Rob's a great bloke and I hope to be supporting some of his events next year with my VJMC section.

KwackerZ1 - Because it's also a bloody good bike!

I now run a 2-3psi fuel pump with a smaller 2.3 float needle valve orifice (recommended by Mikuni for fuel pump setups).
I used to have a separate fuel regulator, but I removed this as I was getting erratic flow.

Most times I don't get issues with fuel pissing out, but once in a while the needle sticks until the bike fires up.

I have my fuel pump on a separate switch to help with the carb getting overwhelmed with fuel. This also serves as a security switch.

Choke is the only issue I have with the HSR 42 on my bike. When very cold the choke circuit doesn't come close to being rich enough, so I have to use the accelerator pump to prime. Two twists of the throttle and it's fire briefly and stall - then repeat until I can get constant feathering of the throttle to keep the bike going until it's warm. I understand the carb can be modified to help here - have you done anything with the choke circuit?
