Took the Z1 out for a spin today to the Churchill Barriers to get some pictures which I have been planning to do all summer but never got round to it. The Barriers were built at the beginning of WW2 to stop German U-Boats entering Scapa Flow which was the cheif naval base in the UK.
Thanks for all the comments guys. Yes the KH400 was one that I restored last winter for a friend of mine. I kept the black visor down to cover up the wrinkles, grey hair and glasses
My friend with the KH400 and myself are heading down to Stafford next weekend, hope to meet some of you there. If I keep the black crash helmet on you will recognise me. Orkney Stig
Orkney: well worth a visit. Popped over on my Z1 a couple of years ago.
Sheldon Cooper moment: Did you know....Before they constructed the barriers these narrow and shallow channels/sounds were thought to be adequately protected with anti-submarine nets and sunken wrecks, however in October 1939, U 47 navigated the obstructions by drifting in at high tide at night and launched an attack on HMS Royal Oak which eventually capsized with the loss of over 800 sailors. The U Boat escaped by same route undetected.
This was hugh blow to morale at the beginning of the war and Churchill couldn't risk another such loss.
HMS Royal Oak is a war grave and rests in 100ft of water.
Chapel in the pics was constructed by Italian POWs?
Yes, this is the only Z1 in Orkney. There was a Z1000 here way back in the day but it is gone now. If you ever come across to Orkney again be sure to give me a shout. I've gone over to the dark side since the pictures were taken as I have bought another triple, an H2C.

Hi. Your Z1 is a beauty. Did you buy the H2C in the bonhams auction at Stafford. Remember we spent some time looking over it on the Saturday. Regards to you and your mate from Steve.
Any chance of pictures
It was great to meet up with you at Stafford and be able to put a face to a name. I didn't buy the H2C at Stafford, I bought the one that was on ebay at the same time. I am away working all week but will post a picture soon.
