Smoking Zed.......Bypass blast

#1 PostAuthor: martinz1000r » Sat Oct 08, 2016 2:08 pm

At Spa I got told my Moriwaki Zed could have been mistaken for a diesel the amount of smoke it was kicking out. Incorrectly torqued (as in none) head nuts obviously did not help but I thought I'd stick the old Drift camera on it this morning and give it a run round the bypass before it goes in to winter hibernation. Personally I don't think this too bad. Certainly not worth ripping the motor apart for new rings this winter. Thoughts (Al....)??

BTW turn speakers to LOUD!

And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

I'd only consider it a problem if you have ridiculous oil consumption.

thanks for replies. Oil consumption is minimal and i think that some smoke is to be expected as its been on it's side stand and not run for at least 6 weeks.

I'll leave well alone

That's chuffing out a lot less than it did at Spa! As you say the head bolts not done up wouldnt have helped but it was producing quite an impressive smoke screen when you shut off going in to corners.

Motor sounds crisp enough to me, smoke aint to bad. At the end of the day its being ridden and enjoyed ( like mine are) not hidden away, fair play to ya, great video. As said, if oil consumption is acceptable, leave it and keep on enjoying the bike. :D

smoking Zed.

My tuned Gpz1100 has smoked a bit for the last 25 years especially on start up but doesn't use loads of oil so never bothered me. ( It has had a couple of valve rebuilds over the years but always been running a cosworth 1170 piston kit.) It sounds great buy the way and love those wheels. Enjoy it Martin.

It was smoking more at Spa as Dave said. Both acceleration and deceleration were about equal. This was before the discovery of the head nuts all being more loose than finger tight. A half turn or more away from contacting their respective washers. Running like that i couldn't see how it was not blowing the head gasket or blowing oil out of the outer studs. Torqueing all the head nuts down has made a difference so my guess is that it must have a copper head gasket and its piano wired. If thats true then i would guess that it has had oil pass across the gasket face from cylinder to cylinder or from outer studs to cylinder as smoke was blue and 'free flowing'
Are the crowns of the two outer pistons more oily or blacker than the two inners? A compression test or leakdown test would say a lot more.
I noticed it has external oil feeds to the head. Are the passageways up the outer barrel studs blocked off and oil fed to the head externally or just linked across from inlet to exhaust? Is it running on semi or fully synthetic?
