I have been offered a p/ex for my TL with a zx6r j1 (2000?) with cash my way from a good mate at work. He has owned it about 5 years and it has been well looked after, only ridden in the dry and serviced regularly and not been messed about with. Anyway, with a busy year ahead I think commuting will be the best opportunity for me to get on a bike so the thought of something a bit more economical than the TL and less likely to annoy the neighbours at 0630 has an appeal. Has anyone owned one and what do they think? Commute is 20 miles each way on mainly A roads but there are some cracking B road alternatives if I fancy the long way home. The bike has 25k on it. I still own zx636 that I had since new 2002. no problems at all very fast 172 on my, also good on petrol about 40 to the gallon so if you are thinking of buying your mates ,should be much the same

Have you had a go on it, I could never get used to having to rev the nuts out of them. If you are only used to big litre bikes it may not be for you. Good in every other way and built to last just not for me.

I've not ridden this one but have ridden a later one. It was odd having to keep the revs so high I'll admit but hopefully I could get used to it. I will test ride this if I decide to go further. I'm hoping it'll be a more sensible alternative but still have enough go when needed.

check the frame thoroughly as they are prone to breaking ( cracking ) lost count of how many i replaced when i was at cradley zx9r also suffers from the same thing

Thanks z1bman, I will have a thorough look of the frame, cheers for that I have read a lot about these but nothing yet about the frame cracking.

at one point cradley had 20 frames in stock for the zx6 apart from that they are a good bike valve clearance is also critical & need checking every 8000 miles

Crikey. I heard about valve clearance checks being a bit pricey too. I will check all this stuff, thank you.
