H**** 125 EXCITER COIL.....

Hi All,
I have this little H**** cb125rs..1984!! well actually, I bought it for my son as his first motorcycle, anyhow its been a pain, sometimes it ran ok, sometimes it cut out, etc, it has an electrical fault, I have replace coil condeser etc, I just found out the other day, it has a exciter coil, part of the generator, which supplys power to the coil, it never even entered my head that it would have this, it would appear that is whats causing the problem, according to RAC man, anyhow, to cut a long story short, we have purchase another unit, 2nd hand, so hopefully this will be in good working order, and do the trick, if not, I wanted to know, if this set up, the coil, can it be diverted to get power to come from battery?
my son is a little fed up with bike at mo, so if I can get it sorted and him and back on the road, then I be happy, he be happy......
