Nice bit of vid

D-Day arrived.... not only was there the Lunar eclipse to make it a day to remember, I finally picked up my Le Mans MkII.

It was my first ever ride on a V-Twin Shafty, so I was a bit on edge as I'd come across a few warnings about the torque reaction and rear end rising

But to my relief, it was nothing to sweat about. Yes, i did notice a bit of "twisting" from the beasty when at a stand still and the revs started dropping real low and I blipped the throttle, but it was nowt too bad.

My ride home was through the country back roads of Dorset and I LOVED every minute of it. The brakes work fairly well and the handling and ride are great. I didn't go too mad as it's shod with new Avon RoadRiders and they need scrubbing in, but the bike is steady as a rock.

When I got home (an hour later) I did have one issue.... oil over my left boot. :??

Luckily I have a good mate with a 1960's V7 and he had a similar experience when he collected his bike, so he told me to check the oil level. The dipstick showed it was above the MAX mark! SO I drained a few cupfuls out... and it was still showing FULL Shocked

In the end I drained 1.5 ltrs out and it now reads midway on the dipper. No wonder it was spewing it out of the dipstick tube area.

I've given the bike a quick wash & polish and she looks good - to say I'm well chuffed is an understatement.

She's no spring chicken, but a tidy rider, sure enough

Have had a few minor issues

Apart from the engine having +1.5 ltrs too much oil, the r/hand carb was loose and hanging half out after a ride...... also the forks had loose lower pinch bolts :??

Another problem raised it's head, the bike wouldn't hold large throttle openings. It started to pull-back as half throttle was reached, and got a bit worse as it was opened more.... Appeared to be running weak as it picked up again as throttle was backed off.

What with the lighter evenings I decided to check the carbs & jets out.

R/hand carb: The float height was set at 17mm, should be 24mm (although this meant it was probably running a bit richer). General thought is to run #150 mains with Lanfranconi pipes, instead of standard #135's, so I swapped the jet for a #150.

L/hand carb: Changed float height to 24mm, went to remove the #135 main... there wasn't one!!! So thats the problem. Thinking about it, the missing main jet left a large orifice (snigger) which meant the low pressure over the venturi wasn't enough to pull any fuel up - therefore making it lean!

Out for a test ride and shes running great... sorted :P

UPDATE:

The bikes been running great - surprisingly quick for a tractor engine, and handles superbly, these are truely impressive old machines.

After a few moans about the issues Howard (Conquest Motorcycles owner) agreed to send me a cheque for £200 - which is now safely banked!

The starting has been a bit sluggish, but Howard said he had charged it up and thought it should be okay, but would replace it if not. Well, it seemed to have a duff cell as wasn't man enuff for the job, so Howard agreed to drop a new battery off to me. The starter motor on these engines is off a car so needs a BIG battery, + 24Ah.

Howard duly arrived Thursday evening with a new Shield AGM battery and to my surprise also handed over another £200 cash to compensate me for all the hassle :P

Now the bike starts at the touch of the button and all's rosy in the garage.

Cheers lads.

Last night I repaired the old repair on the r/hand side panel, with some P38 & a bit of galv wire...

Good thing with P38 is it's easy to cut & shape. They are a bit flimsy in that area! So this morning I fit the panel & it's fine... result.

Go to wheel the bike out for a ride... it hardly moves!!! WTF? The rear tyre's flat Unhappy A "U" tack is in the tread.... so thats 2 x holes close together in a 100mile tyre. Up on the centre stand and stuggle to get with the wheel out (its already on a plank to raise it)... but manage to get it clear. Next I see a drip from the rear caliper... I've managed to fracture the pipe where it goes into the caliper!!! All the pipes & hoses are original Brembo, so I suppose after 36yrs could do with replacing.

Luckily I have a box of brake stuff and managed to sort out a suitable braided s/s line (HEL) and some fine threaded bango's. The inner bleed nipple has been sheared off at some point so I'll take it into work and carefully drill it out on the pillar drill.

Seem to be one thing after another, but I suppose thats the joy of old bikes
