Thanks all.

Why would the oil be the number one suspect? Should I change brands?

Its the factory recommended stuff... :(

It more than meets the spec so should be fine.

It is possible however unlikely you have a bad batch.

You could try a different brand to see if it helps your plight.

I've used Millers ZSS 10w40 with no issues for many 1000's of miles, but others will no doubt prefer - aunties old peculiar or whatever.
Had a very bad 'batch' experience with Motul - cost me a bottom end rebuild!

I'd try springs and the cable first and see how it goes, if it still slips it would be a full strip and clean to get the old oil off the plates - then re-soak with the new stuff.

Hi , I've have a couple of those wonderful Speedie's here in Oz & Triumph here are now insisting on using a 15/50 weight oil as oppose to a the older 40 weight & "definately" a Full Synthetic (with preferably as much Zinc content as you can get ! )
With what you have said ...........I'd be taking out the plates & springs & measuring them. The outer & inner most Fibre plates are in fact different ( thicker ) than the other 8 Internal fibre one's....... New, these 2 thicker plates = 3.8mm thick & have a service limit is 3.6mm . The other 8 internal fibre plates are New= 3.3mm & service limit of 3.1 . There is no free Clutch Spring lengh or service limit shown in the Factory manual ...so I'd ring Triumph Hinckley's Tech dept & I'm sure they'll tell you the Free lengh & service limit of them. Good luck Buddy. Johny B

Thanks mate.

I'll give them a call and put the oil question to bed.

Hi all.

Not to bleat on about this but I phone Triumph and a dealer who asked if the steel plates had machined dots or pitts in them. I said they were smooth. They said there is a later plate type that holds the oil in between better. Helps at hi-temps.

But THEN they said the correct oil is the fully synthetic Castrol RACING version of the Power 1 they recommended before.

This would explain clutch slippage but not the fact the cable is let out all the way to get the correct free-play.

Anyway. Oil change and new cable should hopefully see it sorted.

Hello again.

Well - the correct oil is in place. New cable and new clutch springs. Has made no difference.

Even with the adjuster all the way out the clutch barely engages and so slips at anything past 3000rpm. Zero free play at lever.

So it can only be a worn clutch.

One last question - are aftermarket clutches worth a look?

EBC = £75 V Triumph - £180.

Thanks again.
