yes, it's all complete. Had the large starter clutch gear off on the bench ehile trying to give the rotor/crank taper a bit of a lap. The clutch works smoothly too. Everything looks ok apart from the tapers both look rough. Lapping is helped a bit but i haven't got the crank taper completely smooth ...

yes, it must be. I can turn the crank over with a socket on the points end with the generator cover in place but it won't turn on the starter motor. With the cover and stator off, the engine spins easily on the starter button. Rotor does appear to have a slight wobble but could be due to the irregul...

Alternator problems
I've asked in another, very old thread but thought i'd start a new one as well as this seems to be a common problem. Just trying to get a motor running which has stood for 10 years since apparently being rebuilt. Problem traced to the alternator rotor which, when i take the outer cover off, spins up...

Thanks for the tip Pigford, just done the same thing with my new project. The tapers in the rotor and on the crankshaft have damage and when bolted up, the rotor has a slight wobble which is enough to stop the starter motor spinning the engine. Measured the run out with a DTI and found this to be 0....

A good point Garry.L Mostly because i can buy a donor bike and use the engine, carbs, electrics, switchgear, etc for so much less cash and time than sourcing Z parts individually and getting everything to mate. I realise it's not a locally approved of use for a Z1000 frame! but it'd never get built ...

alternative engine
Hello learned friends. finished my first build of a z1000a1 with some great help from you guys. Next big project time. I have a z1000a1 frame and was thinking of a more modern build but have limited engineering resourses. What is the best/easiest path here? Was considering buying a 1200 bandit as a ...

Z1B candy blue was such a beautiful colour though! Not surprised to learn i'm not the first to consider what i'm proposing. Haven't decided 100% yet but wanted an original 900 scheme. It's between that and Green with the green/gold pinstripes. My next project will be a more modern take going down th...

I'm doing a similar thing to my '77 Z1000A1. It won't be a show pony but i would like to get the engine cleaned without splitting it. How much did it cost and how do i contact Mr Smethurst? Also leaning towards Blue Z1B paint. Yours look beautiful. Would you recommend your sprayer? How much did that...

Apologies for hijacking this post but i'm on the look out for a right hand caliper as well to beef up the standard left one on my KZ1000A1. They seem to be as rare as hen's teeth. Does anyone know what else would fit (even prepared to turn the fork sliders round and fit a pair behind the fork leg) T...

So, after failing with the 'sharp tap' technique, Allens have them! They usually block up all the holes and fill them with light oil to 'hydraulic' them out. Trouble is i think i have bent them so I have to wait and see what Allens can do. They did have a beautiful set of CR's in their display case ...
