Thanks again
Thanks - yes it's just dawned on me that this is not as straightforward as I had imagined. I need to do some more thinking about what I really want to achieve.

Fork swap on '78 Z1000 LTD. Advice needed
I seem to remember reading on this forum a couple of years ago, that swapping out the front-end for a Zephyr 750 (41mm forks ?) was relatively straightforward ? Has anyone done this and can offer any advice ? I already bought a Zephyr 750 yoke a while back, but I'm now ready to tackle this project. ...

Ton Up Day at Jack's Hill Cafe
Got totally soaked through on the way up to Towcester today, but had dried off again by the time I arrived. Nice selection of bikes and well worth the trip. Here's mine: http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y524/td5_pete/Ton%20Up%20Day%202014%20Jacks%20Hill%20Cafe/IMG_0204_zpsff1ad34c.jpg Spotted thi...

What's the widest tyre I can fit on a J18xMT3.00 rim ?
The rear rim on my GPz750 is marked J18xMT3.00
I think the standard fitment was a 130/80 (although it's got a 120/90 on at the mo).
Can I fit a 140/70 here ? - I don't see any clearance issues, so it's only if it's safe on the rim...

Headlight dips out momentarily when revving the motor-ideas?
Now I've got my z1000a back together and running, I noticed that when I blip the throttle from tick-over to about 3000rpm, the headlight dips out for a fraction of a second. I thought I was imagining it at first, but with the bike in the workshop and the light shining at the door - it's noticeable a...

Some more fixes : Found that there was no throttle 'push' cable on the bike - The sleeve was there, but it had no cable in it. Ordered one from wemoto.com for £9 and it arrived the next day. Fitted it and adjusted the cable stops and free play according to the clymer manual. Also took a look at the...

Next Job - Investigate why the previous owner had put in very hot plugs (B5ES)... he said that cylinder #1 plug was coking up and that the hot plugs had solved it. ( ...and the bike seemed to run nicely when i rode it back home after buying it ) (1) One nice suprise was to find DYNA ignition and coi...

Next job - sort out the wiring as there seemed to be a few botches. (1) Fuses were all wrong and the housing had melted at some point. Had been botched with a couple of inline fuse holders - Found a replacement fuse box from a KR-1S on eBay for 99p was identical. Wired it in and put correct fuses in...

KZ1000 cafe racer tinkering
Just a log of what I've been up to with the z1000 to get it ready for the spring. Absolutely no pearls of wisdom here - I'm picking this up as I go along. Absolutely nothing adventurous here as I'm a mere beginner. First job for any new bike with unknown provenance is oil and filters. Warmed the eng...

So - I opened this thread - let me tell you how I got on. I bought one of the cheap 'w' shaped tools with lever for about 8 quid as I am basically tight and I figured I'm only changing a couple of shims and unlikely to need it again anytime soon. I found it a HUGE fiddle trying to position the 'w' p...

Two types of valve shim tool - which is best ?
I need to change a couple of shims on my kz1000 a1. There seems to be two types of tool available: (1) A lever and a 'W' shaped piece of metal that you shove between the camshaft and the edge of the bucket ( on eBay ) (2) My CLYMER manual shows a tool that clamps on the side of the head and leaves t...

Viton is a flurocarbon rubber and probably 'over engineered' for any standard road going air cooled Z. It's used where maximum resistance to elevated temperatures are required. However it has a low compression set so won't exhibit the problem you describe. I doubt Kawasaki were using them in the 70...
