Restoring alloy wheels
Hi, Last time I attempted to change the front tyre I used tyre levers without rim protectors. So much for engaging brain before work. The result was some unpleasant dents in the alloy, so much so I have had to run the front tyre with a tube. The time has come to put some new rubber on the bike and I...

Weather here has been wonderful, the worst summer drought in a decade, BUT GREAT FOR BIKING!! The old Z goes like a bird on the open road, but getting the leave pass is challenging. However I have convinced the wif that bike more environmentally friendly than the car (fuel consumption etc- much bull...

I got a scan of the factory manual for my J (KZ1000 80-83) on CD from the US for about US$1.50. the scan has been done by hand and many of the PDF pages are not quite square on but its all there. Have a Look at the US site KZrider.com. They get their funding via a kick back from ebay so there are al...

Removing fuel stains from paint
recently I had my J resprayed. However I have had the misfortune of filling the tank and leaving it on the prop stand for the day in the sun. The fuel cap obviously leaked leaving a shity brown stain down the tank paint work on one side. I have tried gentle application of some cutting compound to re...

I have no idea what the conversion yielded in extra HP and I would have to say I really didnt notice much difference in performance, but that may be more of a comment about how I ride. What I did notice though was the cessation of oil burning and clean plugs which was what I was aiming for. I though...

I put a Wiseco on my j as it was more cost efficent than buying all the stock parts. Arguabley better quality as well Runs sweet with nothing done on carbs at all. Only hassle was putting barrells on as much of the champfer lost on rebore. However despite having it torqued down correctly, slight sme...

Carb Sync
Hi I decided to by a vacuum gauge set from Z1 enterprises and attaching it to the 4 carbs on my J showed that one carb was a single graduation different from the remaining three. Is this sufficent to warrant a tweak or should I leave well enough alone? I have had a look at the linkage between the ca...

My experience has been with the wiseco only. I queried them on which of the two comprision rings was which as the kit didn't say. The bright shiny one was the upper and the dull one the lower compression. Check the ring gaps in the bore before fitting. I have nver found these needed doing but it pay...

I would ensure that you made up some wooden blocks to rest a pair of pistons on as the block is lowered. The specs are in most manuals but ensure its long enough to sit confortably across the crank case mouth supporting the pistons either side of the conrod. My block was bored out to take a Wiseco k...
