I've heard good things about this guy, although I've no personal experience.

Re: #00265 calling from California

Hi all - I have been living in Northern California for 7 years but planning to move back to the UK in about a year because we miss mushy peas... I couple of weeks ago I had 10 days holiday in California, up as far as Monterey. Beautiful place, lovely people and amazing food- even if there were no m...

You resto was an interesting read Bonneville.
Very impressed with the paint job from a spray can.

Also noticed the bit about being in the bottom shed rather than projects, so if any mod is passing this way, please move this to the appropriate forum- thanks.

Ha- no, it's my Jazz, it's like a van with windows!

The Z400J might be small, but they are heavy little buggers.
Having fun stripping bits off this bike, hopefully the engine ain't seized, but other little bits will save time and postage on eBay! For £135 it seemed like a risk worth taking.

Today I collected this... It's an 81, and the engine number means it's a proper Z400J engine. It has sat in a dry garage for 10 years, full off dust etc, but I'm hoping the engine is relatively OK. Loads of other spares on the bike too. Not bad for the equivalent of £135. http://i896.photobucket.co...

To the best of my knowledge.. No, they were never fitted with main stands and no stands from other models will fit. There is a US based site, ZRXOA, and someone on there did make them, although I'm not sure how successful it was and if he still makes them. Worth joining and doing a search. In the ga...

Nice looking bike Lee.
That colour scheme is what my little 400 (that you've been advising me on the forum) is supposed to be.
Hope you don't change the colour scheme!!

I'd reckon a 550 engine would be easy to find Vs a 400J? A few minutes on eBay and it looks like you are correct on that one! Why not follow a period modified resto, then you can use what you have, bin the airbox for some filters and have some fun at the same time. I don't like filters, but that's ...

Isn't a 400F engine exactly the same as a 400J engine? No, they don't seem to be. Apart from different carbs, the part numbers for the pistons are different, and also the cylinder block part numbers. The J has a mechanical tacho drive, the F electric. I THOUGHT the Bore x Stroke ratio was different...

Thanks for the reply Lee. I'd like to restore if it's feasible, if not as you suggest I'll try to work around the current engine. I mentioned the 550 as trikerdrew put forward the idea earlier. If the 550 fitted straight in, I might consider it, and it might be as rare as a 400J engine! But the drea...

Thanks Z1bman.
Yeah, I noticed that and wondered if it's worth exploring.
A complete engine would be the (elusive) dream, and I wonder about the chances of finding top end bits.
I'll have a think.

I do appreciate you taking theme to find the link and posting it here. :up

My Z400J project is at the taking apart stage. I now know why the airbox didn't sit quite right, it was because the carbs were not OEM. Couldn't figure out why anyone would do that until I checked the engine number, and the engine isn't a Z400J engine! It had been changed a long time ago, and the &q...

WTD Z400J engine

Bit of a long shot, but if anyone knows of a Z400J engine (circa 81-83) for sale I'd appreciate a heads up.

Cheers,
Davy

Practical Sportsbikes had an article on how to do this sort of thing, it was in the June 2012 issue.
