Thanks Ralph I have been unable to find anyone in the UK who has a dyno and charges less than £200 with no guarantee they can see the problem. I live in West London and there is no one here. I went out for a ride today and had to adjust the air screw to 1 and 1/2 it should be 1 and 3/8 so tomorrow ...

Ta Zed

I have gone down a notch on the needle from 3 to 2. It started OK and felt smoother once it had warmed up. Sadly the rain stopped a test today.

Who or what is "Allens".

hi All Been a while since posting. Took that long to get the bike up and running after "thecatswhiskersofz900" had been at it. For anyones information if you get oil in the airbox get an oil pressure gauge and when it stops working you know you have a blocked oilway!!!!!!! So if you send y...

The head gasket was leaking from pot 3 to pot 4 hence the excessive pressure building up in the crankcase. The purpose of the crankcase breather is to allow gasses that build up to go somewhere The head and block were also out of sync and had to be ground. The chap who did this assured me he had che...

Thanks Steve I took the bike to your recommended chap. He found the fault, head gasket leakage between cylinders 3 and 4. So this has been the problem from day 1 ever since the "expert" re-built the engine. All that crap he gave about crankcase top and bottom not original or mating up corr...

hi Steve I have found a local place in NW London who will do the Dyno for £20 and the leak test fo about the same. So he says. However this place is a god shop as I took the bike there when a bought it a few years ago and the owner tried to fix it, never charged me for about 4-6 hours work ( I took...

Hi Steve An excellent series of suggestions. However a local bike place wants £300 to do a Dyna and this leak down test. I can get new pistons 1mm oversize patent ones and a rebore for £340. So I think its time for Ebay I cant throw any more money on an old motorcycle. A shame but such is life. th...

Thanks Steve,

This is most interesting. I always use genuine Kawasaki gaskets it was a 2 piece I think with a new inner rubber.

If the head gasket was blown would this no show on a compression test and would the bike not "pull" well under load?

I have disconnected the little "Z" pipe from the crankcase breather to the Airbox and have fitted a plastic tube that goes into a small bottle under the carbs. It has some small pin holes above the pipe bottom fro breathing. If I ever get this heap started this year I will re check oil lev...

Hi The compresion ratio per the Kawasaki Factory owners manual is 145 PSI The service limit that requires attention ios 100 PSI So My bike allowing for gauge error of 2 % is spot on. The mystery deepens. I am grateful for the comment that the person who did this to my bike should put it right. I agr...

Hi and thanks some interesting comments. The most promising seems to be the re honing that was done that is the problem. A compression test seems to indicate 142psi to 148psi on all cylinders. The oil level has been done on a level road with a spirit level on the top case. The gauze square is presen...

Z900 engine problems

Hi All, Back after a long break. I posted some time back about some engine problems I had had. THe bike was totally rebuilt, bored out 0.5mm oversize. By a local chap who actually runs a motorcycle repair shop. The bike ran fine except the carbs were from a Z1000, so it was not perfect. A year later...
